Kevin M. Sims,
DDS, MS

Dr. Kevin M. Sims is a periodontist with a passion for oral health and a commitment to changing people's lives with every smile. His interest in periodontics began when he learned about the connection between oral health and systemic diseases. Today, he is known for his distinctive skills, innovations in the field, and devotion to bringing the best to his patients.

About Dr. Sims

Dr. Sims believes in providing patient-focused care and considers his patients part of his periodontal family. He takes the time to discuss treatment options and answer questions so that patients can make informed decisions and feel comfortable with their treatment and its outcome.

His commitment to patient care extends beyond the office. Dr. Sims provides patients with his home and cell phone numbers and personally calls surgical patients following surgery. His practice also offers emergency hours when needed.

Dr. Sims was born in North Dakota and raised in Southern California and Southern Nevada. Before entering dentistry, he attended the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and Idaho State University, where he received degrees in Radiology Technology and Pharmacy. He practiced for several years as a radiological technologist and later as a critical care pharmacist in hospitals in Nevada, Idaho, and Alabama.

Education & Residency

Dr. Sims graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry in 1994. He then completed a three-year residency in Periodontics at UAB, where he received his Master of Science in Oral Biology.

During the final year of his residency, Dr. Sims served as a research fellow and conducted research involving animal modeling for future regenerative procedures.

Professional Credentials

Dr. Sims holds a Master of Science in Oral Biology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, and a Fellow of the International College of Dentists. He was also the recipient of the First Distinguished Young Alumni Award from the UAB School of Dentistry.

Professional Activities & Community Involvement

Dr. Sims is actively involved in the Birmingham District Dental Society, where he has served as Continuing Education Program Chairman and was appointed to the Peer Review Committee and Executive Council.

He is a faculty member of the Alabama Dental Hygiene Program, where he instructs dental hygiene students in pharmacology. He also served a five-year term on the American Dental Association Test Construction Committee, writing test questions in the periodontal and implantology disciplines for the National Dental Boards.

Dr. Sims holds the academic rank of Clinical Associate Professor at the UAB School of Dentistry in the Department of Periodontics and has been asked to serve on the Dean's Council for the UAB School of Dentistry.

He also serves as Secretary/Treasurer of the Board of Dental Examiners of Alabama and is a member of the American Board of Dental Examiners.
